Episode 10015:Jim Lahey Reviews The New Domino’s Pizza
April 21, 2010 8:00 amBread guru Jim Lahey is so erudite in the arts and science of breadmaking, and so monastically committed to the creation of great pizza, that I thought he would be just the man to review the new Domino’s pizza. Would Lahey give it two thumbs up? Watch and see!
I love it. Let’s take the ridiculous corporatocracy on by actually giving it considered discussion. Interestingly, your video comes with a banner ad at the bottom of the page that offers, “free cheesy bread with any large 1-topping pizza at menu price” from Domino’s…Should this detract from my experience of your interview in any way or is it just a f*** you from a steamrolling giant?
I have to agree that it’s actually worse than the last recipe. We took a chance on it about a month ago, and while our expectations weren’t very high, we were shocked at how bad it actually was. After waiting for OVER AN HOUR for our pizzas to be delivered, we were so hungry that we quickly ate the first pizza out of pure hunger-desperation, then threw the second one in the trash.
It’s just bad food, pure & simple.
I was fascinated by the oven. Speaking as someone who grew up working with genuine stone ovens, it seems ludicrous that this crappy electric oven should seek to appear genuine by dint of having, what is obviously a decorative, gas flame in the middle left hand side.
Real ovens never showed a naked flame.
It makes this piece a many layered item. On the surface, there are the genuine comments of the critic. Under that layer there is a whole realm of baking that he is, almost certainly, unaware of.
Bread, from a real oven, should have a hard, brittle crust capable of tearing your gums. The inner loaf should be as light as an angel’s wings.
Between me and thee… I haven’t had that good a bread in 40 years!
God help our children.
Co. is still my favorite pizza in Manhattan, I don’t care what anybody says. Good work on the videos Josh, these are great!
To Bern:
In Co’s defense, the oven you see in the background is a real wood oven and they were burning actual logs. Unfortunately these shots didn’t make the cut, but its real, I swear.
