Episode 10036:Noah Bernamoff on Katz’s Deli

May 20, 2010 8:00 am

This episode is filed under:

Young Noah Bernamoff, the owner of Mile End, said some unkind things about Katz’s in the New York Times a while back, and I wanted to give him an opportunity to enlarge upon them. Surely he couldn’t have meant to demean !

Did anyone here a word Noah was saying? I was just enthralled by the video of the meat. I will be by the weekend to give it a gnaw… Thanks Josh!

JO

yeah well, Katz’s probably believes an owner should comb their hair.

Josh

Was it really hard to hear?

Every time this kid speaks it makes me angry and a bit sad. I’ve never heard anybody complain about the chicken soup at Katz’s, because nobody I know would ever order it… as all of us New Yorkers know that katzs is a Pastrami and frankfurter restaurant… what they do is steam meat and grill hot dogs, not make stock, or hamburgers, or cheese steaks, or french fries. Katzs has been at its current location for around ninety years, and has looked largely the same… this placing isnt trading on nostalgia any more than your grandmother is… have you ever been there late at night? dinner time? the place is full of actuall people who work for a living, sorry this isnt a restaurant that only serves hipsters on a trust fund. The one here slinging nostalgia is Bermanoff who, by calling his barbecued beef sandwich “Smoked Meat” is selling an “authentic international ethnic cuisine” that bears very little resemblance to the actual product as it exists in canada. (i’m not even going to address the offensive bagel situation) There is no better pastrami sandwich on the eastern seaboard, if not the world, than katz’s… and their slicers are national treasures… Watching bermanoff and his people slice their pastrami is like watching a prime rib sliced on a cruise ship… This kids ego and chutzpah have gone far enough, and I’m pretty sure its time we stop giving him a mouthpiece. Go back to canada!

the fries should be better at Katz’s. I wish they made them to order so I could get mine well done.

Josh

You’re nuts! The fries at Katz’s are fantastic. My third favorite in New York. That said Mile End has some really great french fries. No one knows why.

Not sure how the sandwiches at Mile End stack up. They look good and all.

I made a point of going to Katz’s when I went to NYC and though it’s tough to even begin to critique the Vatican of pastrami (different faith, but what the hell,) I have to say that while the sandwich was very good, Schwartz’s is much better on all fronts. Personal taste? Sure. But I challenge anyone to compare.

New York is truly a wonder of the world, but between the bagels and the pastrami, it has a few superiority complexes on the go. The big guy Tony Bourdain slips on this banana peel from time to time.

At the end of the day, when they are doing some things so well, I’m always rooting for a place like Katz’s and we might all gently let our friends know when their slip is showing a bit.

Oh yea, “Go back to Canada…?” Come on dude… That’s an excuse not to think, or make a real argument. Capital “C” on Canada, BTW.

Cheers everyone! Keep it coming Mr. Ozersky.

“Smoked meat ain’t pastrami and corned beef aint smoked meat.” Now, who said that?

Josh

Me?

Natalie Sztern

I did not know that Smoked Meat is the Montreal Style Pastrami??? Don’t tell Schwartz’s that…they will kick you out!!

I want an apology for all of Jewish Montreal; no All of Montreal..à tous de nous. Because Montreal Smoked Meat does not discriminate; it loves us all and we, it.

I refer you to the following excerpt:

http://www.gourmet.com/restaurants/2009/03/smoked-meat-versus-pastrami

Noah tell Josh he now needs to apologize….

Natalie Sztern

BTW today, December 29 Noah’s Mile End Deli is finally written up in the Montreal Gazette…so this post will be googled all day long Josh…just so you know the re-bound effects and why.

Thanks alot – your answer solved all my prlobmes after several days struggling
