It’s one thing to make sure that you are earning good grades, hold a part-time job, and get enough exercise, but when you’re in college it can be really difficult to maintain a healthy diet. With all of the late-night studying and papers you will be writing, it’s only natural that you are going to want to pig out from time to time. Unfortunately, this is the best way to gain a lot of weight and if you’re not feeding your brain healthy food, it won’t function as well.
Here is how to avoid eating junk food in college.
Shop for Yourself
The first thing you have to do if you want to avoid eating junk food is to schedule your grocery shopping. You want to make sure that you are going to the store at least once per week, and you should make it the same day and time for consistency. When you do go to the grocery store, you want to make sure that you don’t buy any junk food, but instead, you want to get as much healthy food as you can and make sure you get plenty of food that is easy to prepare. The more work it takes to put your meals together, the more likely you will be to just let your food go to waste.
Carry Snacks in Your Backpack
Once you bring all of your groceries home, you want to place a few of the snacks that you bought in your backpack. These are going to be the things that you can munch on while you’re at school so that you don’t feel tempted to eat from the vending machines. It’s always good to keep foods like cereal bars, trail mix, fresh fruit, and granola on you. Whatever it is, just make sure that you don’t let anything rot in your backpack, and switch it upon yourself so that you don’t get tired of it.
Of course, there are going to be times when you are going to crave junk food and you are going to give in. In this case, you need to come up with a punishment for yourself and you need to stick to it. For example, every time you eat junk food, you may want to make yourself do 20 pushups, or you might deny yourself the ability to do something really fun. No matter what the punishment is, you have to make sure that it’s something that really affects you, and you need to be consistent with it.
Keep Your Kitchen Stocked
Just because you go to the grocery store each week doesn’t mean that your kitchen will always be fully stocked. If you find that you are running out of food at the end of each week, then you need to buy more each time you go. Otherwise, you will inevitably justify eating fast food late at night when there’s nothing at home to eat, and nothing’s open. If you go to University, there won’t be anything but fast food open late at night, so you have to keep your kitchen stocked.
